Hypothyroidism & Memory Loss

THYROID DISEASE HASHIMOTOS THYROIDITIS UNDERACTIVE THYROID

Well, it's now 2009 - so Happy New Year to one & all. It was Burns Night here last night so it was haggis, neeps & tatties all round! (hubbie had the whisky!)

I had my bloods checked 2 weeks ago & alas I am hypothyroid again - I was aware of some hair loss & weight gain - but as usual, you just ignore it & get on with life!
But actually what I have been very aware of in retrospect is a bit of a foggy memory & inability to recall quite simple facts & details which I'm putting down to my low thyroid. Either that or I've suddenly developed very early onset dementia!!

What I've been finding most interesting about the whole low thyroid problem is that I was trundling along quite the thing on 200mg thyroxine a day then doctor reduced it to 150, obviously wasn't enough, they increased it again to 175mg levothyroxine, which is where I've been for a while (have been naughty & not had thyroid levels checked for ages) & lo & behold, my thyroxine has been increased again to, you guessed it, 200mg! I will not be reducing it again unless I'm drastically hyperthyroid. I think I need to be more assertive in requesting all my results rather than just taking the doc or nurse's word for it when they call.

I'm hoping to be back on track a couple of months from now :)

The study I've read recently re thyroid disease & alzheimers unfortunately for me & you appears to point to a link between a thyroid malfunction (regardless of whether low or high) & up to a threefold increased chance of developing alzheimers. Because this has only been an observational study, the scientists have been unable to ascertain what exactly the link between the thyroid & alzheimers is. The fact that the brain tries to maintain thyroid levels at a relatively narrow range may suggest that for it to function optimally, it has to be maintained within this range and going below or above that is not a good thing.

It's not clear, though, how thyroid hormone levels outside this optimal range might trigger Alzheimer's disease. The link was also only observed in hypothyroid women (don't the guys get all the breaks?!!)

Anyway, re memory loss , blueberries & coffee (!!?) are apparently supposed to help. Looks like we'll have to eat & drink up....!!!!

Nice article. Liked the way it brought out the diagnosis. I would recommend another resource, http://www.simplyanswer.com, for answers to specific medical problems… found it very handy.

Could have helped flesh out the problem a bit better and suggest the remedies. Understanding the disease sometimes is not enough. I have suffered through this before. I found www.simplyanswer.com a great resource for my medical problems.

Wonderful depth and breadth in a topic usually not covered well. I have seen similar depth in understanding and solving specific medical needs of people at http://www.simplyanswer.com

I have heard about problems caused by hyprothyroidism, but I didn't know that Hypothyroidism is related to Memory Loss in anyway. Just one thing to say that more you study about Hypothyroidism more you got to to know.

I know hypothyroidism causes weight gain and slowly memory loss. Actually, one suffering from this has to take many precautions rather depending just on medicines.

Hey,
I found your blog by searching for hashimoto's disease on google. About two months ago I was diagnosed. I'm only 23 years old (which I guess is uncommon), but the doctors think I've had it since I was 17. I really liked reading about your experiences, because I don't know anyone with this same issue.

I'm especially interested in your experiences with insomnia and the heart palpitations, because I'm currently having the same problems. I'm having trouble discerning between what is being caused by my medication and what is just normal stress! I thought it might be too much of the synthroid, especially since my doctor just lowered my dosage, but I really have no idea.

Please keep writing, it's nice to hear about someone else's experiences!

P.S. Do you ever get used to having your blood drawn all the time?

Hello! Like the last commenter, I am also 23 and am just now realizing I have hypothyroidism. I've had one blood test support it, but right after that I turned 23 and my insurance ran out, so now I have to wait a few months to get treated (the new healthcare bill will allow me to stay on my mom's insurance. I live in the US!)

I always knew I was slower than everyone else, and everyone seemed to be living life faster and having fun, while I've always been too tired and exhausted to go out and party and have fun. I've also had slow weight gain since I was an older teenager.

Recently, however, I've suddenly been feeling more extreme symptoms of it. I have even more problems with weight, severe brain fog and memory loss, irritability, and my menstrual cycle is completely shot (it can either give you a really bad cycle or absent periods), feelings of depression, as well as brittle nails and thick dry skin.

Life has been SO very difficult for me in this past year. I've been enrolled in my first year of Optometry school, and let me tell you, it is so difficult trying not to flunk out of this program when I'm too tired to study, and I can't seem to recall even simple facts.

I look forward to reading your blog in the months to come! Please keep updating it! You put a funny spin on such a serious disease!

Really sorry for your diagnose of hypothyroid. But it is curable if you are mentally strong enough to deal with its complication. Hypothyroid can be a cause of memory loss along with some hair loss diseases. But it can be cured and has nothing to do with Alzheimer's disease. So calm, strong and have patience during treatment period.

I am glad to have found your blog. I am hypothyroid, too, and have effects nearly every day of it even though I am on my medicine. Right now I'm trying Levoxyl instead of Levothyroxine. I have found that generic worked better for me in the past, so we will see if name brand is really better as I try it one last time before swearing it off completely.

Unfortunately there are a lot of AIDS/Herpes denials on Herbal cures still out there. I did research on them after I was tested HIV/Herpes positive I was so worried am I going to die soon. I continue my search again on herbal remedy for Std, then I found lots of testimony on how Dr Itua Herbal Medicine Cured HIV/Aids, Herpes Virus,Copd, Hepatitis,Shingles, Diabetes,Epilepsy,Infertility, On websites sharing their testimonies, which made much more sense to me. All the authors pronounce Dr Itua As a man with Good Heart, I pick interest in their testimonies and I contact him about my situation then he gave me procedure how it works, I proceed after one week he courier his Herbal Medicine to me and instruct me on how to drink it for two weeks to cure. I receive His Herbal Medicine so I drank it for two weeks as I was told then after 2 days I go for a test I found out I was cured from HIV/Aids & Herpes Virus, I pay homage to him 2 months ago to his country to celebrate with him on his African festival which he told me it usually happens every year. I know there are lots of (HIV)/Aids&Herpes Virus denials of Herbal Remedy movement the same few doctors and they represent a very small faction of the community. I could have died because I refused Natural Herbs Cures for so long, but luckily, by the grace of God I am alive to tell my story.
